Linux server administration

Plenty of small businesses run a Linux box that everyone depends on and nobody maintains: a website, a database, an internal tool. We look after it properly, on Azure or wherever it lives.

Sound familiar?

The problems this solves

  • An Ubuntu server built by a developer who has since moved on, running an operating system version that is out of support.
  • No patching schedule, no monitoring and a vague feeling that the disk is nearly full.
  • A website or application that goes down occasionally, and nobody finds out until a customer calls.

What's included

What we do

Build and hardening

Ubuntu LTS images on Azure or on-premises, CIS-aligned hardening, SSH key-only access, firewall rules and automatic security updates.

Patching and upgrades

A monthly patch window, tested release upgrades before a version goes out of support and a rollback snapshot every time.

Web and application hosting

Nginx or Apache, PHP, Python and Node runtimes, TLS certificates renewed automatically and reverse proxies for internal apps.

Databases

PostgreSQL, MySQL and MariaDB installation, backups, tuning and, where it makes sense, migration to Azure Database managed services.

Monitoring and alerting

Azure Monitor or open-source tooling for CPU, memory, disk, service health and certificate expiry, with alerts to email or Teams.

Containers and automation

Docker and Docker Compose deployments, systemd services and shell or Ansible automation for repeatable changes.

How it runs

A typical engagement

  1. 1

    Discover

We document what the server runs, how it is accessed, what depends on it and what would break if it went away.

  2. 2

    Stabilise

Backups and monitoring first, then the security gaps: open ports, password logins, unsupported versions.

  3. 3

    Improve

Upgrades, hardening and automation, applied in a maintenance window with a snapshot to roll back to.

  4. 4

    Maintain

A monthly patch and review cycle with a short report, and someone to call when something looks wrong.

Outcomes

What you get

  • Every server on a supported operating system version, patched on a schedule.
  • Alerts that reach a person before a customer notices.
  • Access by named users with keys, not shared passwords.
  • Documentation that means the next person can pick it up.

Questions

Frequently asked

Which distributions do you support?

Ubuntu is our home ground and the one we are certified on. Debian, Red Hat family and Alma or Rocky are all fine. We are honest if something is outside our experience.

Can you move our Linux server to Azure?

Yes. Azure Migrate handles the move of the virtual machine, or we rebuild cleanly on a current Ubuntu LTS image and migrate the application, which is often the better result.

Do you offer hosting yourselves?

No. Your servers run in your own Azure subscription or on your own hardware, in your name. We administer them, we do not own them.

What about Windows servers?

Windows Server and Active Directory administration is covered under IT support and infrastructure. Mixed estates are normal and we are comfortable in both.
